Turbochargers to Small Gas Turbines?

The evolutionary development of the small turbocharger with a single stage centrifugal compressor and single stage radial inflow turbine has in the past four decades resulted in a finely honed turbomachinery accessory fully satisfying both thermodynamic and economic constraints. Its similarity to the small radial type of gas turbine auxiliary power unit has enamored many past efforts to adapt its associated aerothermodynamic features and low manufacturing cost attributes into various gas turbine configurations. This paper examines the viability of these efforts in attempting to achieve lower cost small gas turbines, versus those more specially developed, albeit expensive units, already being marketed by small gas turbine manufacturers.
