Abstract
In this paper the author attempts to answer two vital questions concerning lubricating oils, i.e., performance and useful life. Oxidation and corrosion tendencies constitute the major elements in the deterioration of crankcase oils. The essential requirements for conducting oxidation tests are outlined in the paper and the procedure and results of tests are indicated. Observations on the behavior of oils in service also offer a means for predicting oil performance. Acid-vapor tests to determine oil breakdown are discussed and the results of corrosion studies detailed.
