Various phases of drilling research are possible, from tool development (bits, drill strings, percussion drills, downhole motors, etc.), optimization of operating conditions (optimum WT-RPM, bit selection, hydraulics, etc.), to drilling fluids development (fluid loss mud additives, shale stabilization, viscosifiers, etc.). This paper discusses the techniques necessary to conduct pilot-scale, micro-bit drilling research. By employing proper experimental methods, the results of micro-bit research can be applied to the problems associated with the drilling fluids phase of drilling research activities.
